TRADITIONAL ECHOES IN SONG AND DANCE

Become engrossed in the world of the ancient Gaelic songs (sean nós) with the well known singer Treasa Ní Mhiolláin, learn Set- and Céili dances with the experienced dancing instructor Tony Ryan, visit hidden mystic places with the Celtic priest Dara Ó Maoildhia, enjoy the cozy atmosphere in the pubs, walk through the outstanding landscape of the Island along high cliffs and wide beaches and finish this unique culture week dancing and singing with friends from the Island at the Farewell party with live music.

Flights to Dublin or Shannon, then bus from the airport to Galway, arriving before 16.15 pm. I can help with flights if you travel from Switzerland, cheapest fares usually through internet but I also have a good contact to a travel agency.

Organization: Elizabeth Zollinger, an artist from Zurich, lives part time on Inis Mór since 1974 and is strongly connected with the island, its people and its culture. In cooperation with some islanders she created the project “Celtic Spirit “in 1996, offering Cultural Weeks which aim to retain the culture and heritage of Inis Mór while developing and promoting a sustainable tourism on the island.

Treasa

Treasa Ní Mhiolláin: born on Inis Mór, is a well known Sean-nós singer. She participated in many concerts in Ireland and abroad, in the radio and on televison and won numerous prizes and awards. She run workshops all over Ireland and also in Switzerland and is well used to teach the Gaelic songs to non Gaelic speakers. It is great fun to learn these beautiful old songs with her.

Tony Ryan: one of Irelands best dance instructor from Galway, leading Setdancing Workshops in Ireland and all over the world, specially in the States (Milwaukee Festival) and in Switzerland. He is a very pleasant person and a passionate and patient teacher.

Day 1:

Flight to Dublin or Shannon, bus to Galway, meeting point 16.15, bus and boat trip to the Island, evening meal in Kilmurvey House.

Day 2 :

Information about the island and the programme with Elizabeth, walk along the High Cliffs to Bunghabhla (hiking time: about 2 1 / 2 hours), shopping, evening at leisure.

Day 3:

Introduction to the world of Gaelic songs (Sean-nós) with Treasa and Elizabeth, afternoon at leisure.

Day 4/5:

Intensive workshop with Tony Ryan: Set and Céilitänze

Day 6:

Day trip to Kileany, the gentle “East End” with soft sand dunes and beaches, walk along the cliffs to “Dun Duchathair”, back to the main village: shopping, “Man of Aran Movie”, documentary, by Robert Ó Flaherty, 1931 etc, vegetarian buffet in Joel’s, music session in the local pub.

Day 7:

Morning: Dancing, singing, afternoon: visiting hidden mystic places with Dara, ancient ritual at the Holy Well, dinner in Catherines Coffee shop, evening at leisure.

Day 8:

Morning: Dancing, singing, afternoon at leisure, prepare the traditional potatoe dinner and the Farewell Party with friends from the island, 21.00 live music, dancing, singing, “craic“ (fun).

Day 9:

12 noon boat and bus to Galway, transfer to B+B, time for shopping and sightseeing, evening meal in an old Galway restaurant, music session in one of Galway’s famous traditional pubs.
